Frequently Asked Questions About Eligibility and the Application

Who is eligible to apply?
  • Rising sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduate students at Northeastern and any local Greater Boston Area institution. Participants will need to be able to travel to Northeastern for in person sessions – see the “Program Details” page to view the calendar list of in person sessions.
  • We aim to recruit Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) identifying students, although students of all backgrounds may apply.
  • We aim to recruit students from institutions (including community colleges, two-year, and four-year institutions) who may not otherwise have access to mentored research experience in applied psychology at their school.
  • Participants must be able to participate in person at Northeastern University.
Can I apply if I am taking summer courses?

You may apply, but please note in your application that you will be taking summer courses and indicate your expected time commitment for these courses.

Students who are selected are expected to participate full-time. Additionally, the program is designed so that students will benefit most from focusing their time on intensive trainings, research, and networking with other participants, graduate students, and faculty. Therefore, we encourage applicants to strongly consider whether their other summer commitments would impact their ability to full engage.

Can I apply if I am not a Northeastern undergraduate student?

Yes, we aim to recruit students from institutions (including community colleges, two-year, and four-year institutions) who may not otherwise have access to mentored research experience in applied psychology at their school.

Can I apply if I can only participate virtually?

No, all participants must be able to participate in person Monday through Friday the week of June 24-June 29th, every Monday and Tuesday for the duration of the program, and Friday August 16th for the end-of-program research presentations.

What should I include in my personal statement?

Your personal statement should reflect your unique identities and experiences and communicate your passion for the field of psychology. Below are a few prompts to consider when writing your personal statement:

  • When did you first become interested in psychology and mental health?
  • Was there a pivotal event or situation that spurred your interest?
  • What personal values (e.g., community, social connection, health) do you have that you want to bring into the field?
  • How have your life experiences prepared you for a career in psychology?
How should letters of recommendation be submitted?

Letters can be submitted in the application or can be sent by recommenders directly to neu.roadmap@gmail.com. If you have questions or issues, please contact us at neu.roadmap@gmail.com.

What if I am having trouble finding recommenders to write me a letter? *At least one letter is required.
